Roll Out the Barrel

An intoxicating evening celebrating the British pub on film

The Hyde Park Picture House is to host an evening celebrating the Great British Pub on Tuesday August 14th with a little help from Kirkstall Brewery.

The cinema will be turning its old-fashioned kiosk into a mini bar and serving some of the local brewery’s fine ales to accompany a screening of Roll Out the Barrel – The British Pub on Film, a unique and fascinating collection of films made between 1944 and 1979 devoted to that most traditional of national institutions: the public house.

From a wartime documentary to an impressionistic look at a day in the life of a Tyneside pub, the shorts, put together by the British Film Institute, provide the perfect measure of cultural change in Britain from the perspective of the bar and lounge.

Doors will open at 8.30pm, half an hour before the film, so audiences can get a pint in. The bar will remain open for refreshments throughout the screening and there will be an opportunity to stay for a final drink when the film has ended.

Roll Out the Barrel, Tuesday 14th August, 9pm (doors 8.30pm), tickets from £4.50-£6.50.
